April 2019
Social Engagement Through Crafting
Jessica Howarth
Session Synopsis
What impact can crafting have on individuals? Communities?
In April of 2019, Jessica Howarth and several of her crafting colleagues from Scotland, United Kingdom, came together for a round table discussion. Throughout the session, each teaching artist spoke about the impact that crafting can have on participants and communities, particularly those who are typically underserved. They highlighted the ways in which the arts can positively influence mental and physical health. A key focus of the discussion was the empowering nature of choice in craft, emphasizing that there is no right or wrong in what is being made—only what you feel.
The session showcased the collegial community of practice among Scotland’s crafters and makers.
